Francesco Friedrich's bid for a third straight Olympic bobsleigh double effectively ended on day one when he trailed fellow German rival Johannes Lochner by a big margin after the opening two-man runs. Lochner and Georg Fleischhauer started with a course record and then clinched an overnight lead of eight-tenths of a second over Friedrich and Alexander Schüller - a huge margin in the sport.
