Eagles report card after embarrassing loss to Giants originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Eagles’ get-right game turned into a disastrous loss to one of the worst teams in the NFL.
There’s just no excusing what happened at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night. After losing to the Broncos in Week 5, the Eagles were eager to get back on the field and then they were beaten in all three phases in the 34-17 loss to the Giants.
It was ugly and now the Eagles will have to try and fix things on their mini bye week.
Before then, let’s look at the report card from this loss:
Quarterback
Jalen Hurts: 24/33, 283 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
To his credit, Hurts took full accountability for his mistakes after the game, but there were plenty of mistakes from the Eagles’ starting quarterback and the Eagles just aren’t good enough right now to overcome them. A few plays in particular stand out. Hurts just missed a deep ball to DeVonta Smith in the third quarter on a play that really could have turned the tide. The Giants scored on the ensuing possession. And then his interception was just a bad ball that nearly turned into a pick-6. It was Hurts’ first interception of the season and it came at an awful time. While Hurts got off to a good start in the first half, the Eagles’ offense continued to no-show in the second half and he was a big part of it.

Running back
Saquon Barkley: 12 carries, 58 yards
This game started off so promising for the Eagles’ run game. Barkley busted an 18-yard run on the first play of the game and then followed it up with a 13-yarder on the second play. After that, he had 10 carries for 27 yards and was bottled up for most of the evening. The holes just aren’t there. And later in the game, A.J. Dillon got loose with the football and coughed it up.
Grade: C
Receiver
A.J. Brown: 6 catches on 9 targets, 80 yards
In addition to Brown’s 80 yards, DeVonta Smith contributed 4 for 49 and Jahan Dotson had 1 for 17 on a scramble drill. There was an opportunity for more if Hurts hit Smith on that deep ball in the third quarter. Unlike last week when Brown seemed to stop running on a deep attempt, this one was just an overthrow from Hurts to Smith, who worked his way open.
Grade: B-
Tight end
Dallas Goedert: 9 catches on 11 targets for 110 yards, 1 TD
Through six games, Goedert already has five touchdown catches, which is tied for his career high in a single season. This touchdown reception in the first quarter came on a shovel pass and Goedert showed great patience to wait for the hole to open. Without Grant Calcaterra (oblique), Kylen Granson and Cameron Latu were bumped up the depth chart. The Eagles finally used Fred Johnson as an extra lineman in this game after weeks of trying to use their tight ends in heavy blocking roles.
Grade: B+
Offensive line
The O-line opened up those early holes for Barkley and then those holes disappeared. Hurts ended up getting sacked three times in this game and the O-line got a little leaky. Without Landon Dickerson (ankle), Brett Toth got the start at left guard and didn’t play well. In particular, Toth and Jordan Mailata really struggled to pass off stunts and the Giants’ defensive line attacked that weakness. Even though Toth isn’t the normal starter, he got a ton of reps next to Mailata in the summer so it’s disappointing to see them not play well together.
Grade: C-
Defensive line
Jordan Davis: 6 tackles, 1 sack
It actually seemed like Davis had a pretty solid game but just about everyone else up front got moved in the run game and allowed Cam Skattebo to pick up 98 rushing yards on 19 carries. The pass rush was pretty much non-existent in this game and whenever the Eagles did get to Jaxson Dart, they just couldn’t seem to bring him down. Some of that credit obviously goes to Dart, but the Eagles should be able to make more plays and they missed their opportunities. They also lost some of their gap integrity in the run game. The Eagles really missed Jalen Carter, who was inactive in this game with a heel injury. We saw more of Ty Robinson, who did have a batted pass. Byron Young had a costly facemask penalty. Patrick Johnson picked up his first-career sack. Jalyx Hunt failed to pick off a Dart pass that hit him in the hands early in the game and the Eagles never got a takeaway in this game.
Grade: D
Linebacker
Jihaad Campbell: 7 tackles
The entire defense struggled from a physicality standpoint and it’s up to the front seven to bring that. Campbell had 7 tackles in this game and Zack Baun had 6. But this game wasn’t up to the standard we’ve become used to seeing from Eagles’ linebackers. Skattebo really brought it for the Giants and the Eagles weren’t able to handle that much juice. Nakobe Dean made his 2025 debut but played on special teams.
Grade: D
Secondary
Adoree’ Jackson: 7 tackles, 2 PBUs
The Eagles lost Quinyon Mitchell in the first half after he injured his hamstring and they really missed him. Kelee Ringo was the CB2 to start this game but played poorly enough in the first half that he was actually benched in favor of Adoree’ Jackson. But once Mitchell went down, the Eagles had to go with Jackson and Ringo on the field in nickel. The Giants attacked Ringo and it worked from the moment Lil’Jordan Humphrey leaped over him for a catch in the first quarter. Ringo gave up some explosive plays and got called for a couple penalties, including a DPI (it was kinda weak) in the end zone. Dart, in his third-career start, had a passer rating of 104.6 throwing to guys who have no business beating the Eagles like this. Remember, no Malik Nabers or Darius Slayton in this one.
Grade: D
Special teams
Braden Mann: 4 punts, 214 yards (53.5), 1 inside 20
The Eagles simply can’t field kickoffs and it’s becoming a real issue. Both Tank Bigsby and A.J. Dillon had some serious blunders in this game. It’s time for the Eagles to activate Xavier Gipson to fill this role. They claimed Gipson but haven’t played him yet; might as well try it. Sydney Brown had another penalty on special teams on a punt return that pinned the Eagles inside their own 10-yard line. Starting field position has been an issue for the Eagles because of shaky special teams play.

Coaching
Record: 4-2
We all wondered how the Eagles would respond to their first loss of the 2025 season and it wasn’t good. They were beaten in every conceivable phase by an inferior opponent on Thursday. They didn’t adjust well and ran a predictable offense again. They were out-muscled on defense. They made errors on special teams and had a huge blunder in their end-of-half situation. Nick Sirianni always talks about fundamentals and mastering the things that take no talent; the Eagles failed in every single one of those areas on Thursday. It’s up to Sirianni to make sure this doesn’t spiral.
