Colts beat Broncos with game-winning field goal on untimed down

Details
14 September 2025

You never know what the end of an NFL game will bring.

The Colts beat the Broncos 29-28 in improbable fashion on Sunday on an untimed down with Spencer Shrader’s 45-yard field goal.

Shrader’s 45-yard kick came after he missed a game-winning, 60-yard attempt wide right. But a leverage penalty on the Broncos kept the Colts alive for one final play — a field goal attempt 15 yards further up the field.

That was Denver’s eighth penalty of the game, and it was plenty costly.

The Broncos had already made some critical errors in the contest. Bo Nix threw an interception early in the fourth with the Broncos up 28-23, taking points off the board that may have been able to put the game out of reach.

Then with the score 28-26, Denver had an offensive facemask penalty that made it first-and-25 at the Indianapolis 40. Wil Lutz banged a 42-yard field goal off the right upright, giving the Colts the opportunity to win it at the end.

Indianapolis wasn’t aggressive toward the end of the game, running the clock down before attempting the 60-yard field goal. But with Denver’s mistakes, Shrader’s long miss didn’t matter.

Colts running back Jonathan Taylor rushed for 165 yards and had two receptions for 43 yards — including a 7-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.

Daniel Jones had another strong performance, finishing 23-of-34 for 316 yards with a touchdown. Tyler Warren led with four catches for 79 yards. Alec Pierce also had four catches for 68 yards.

On the other side, Nix finished 22-of-30 for 206 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. J.K. Dobbins had 76 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown. Troy Franklin caught eight passes for 89 yards.

Now at 2-0, the Colts will be on the road to face the division-rival Titans in Week 3.

The 1-1 Broncos will be in Southern California to face the division-rival Chargers.

Well, this is unexpected.

On the heels of a sterling offensive effort in a Week 1 blowout of the Miami Dolphins, the Indianapolis Colts opened Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos with three scores on their first three possessions.

Combined with seven scores on seven possessions in last week's 33-8 win over the Dolphins, the Colts have opened the NFL season with scores on each of their first 10 possessions. That's a new NFL record.

Per the league, Indianapolis is the first team in league history to score on each of its first 10 possessions to start the season.

This is a Colts team that was projected to struggle under first-year quarterback Daniel Jones, who flamed out as a first-round pick with the New York Giants, who released him midseason in 2024 after five-plus seasons of mostly struggling.

But Indianapolis is thus far a picture of efficiency with Jones under center, who's off to the best start of his career. Jones completed 22 of 29 passes for 272 yards with a touchdown and no turnovers in last week's win over Miami. He added 26 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in that game.

On Sunday he led the Colts to field goals on their first two possessions. He then capped the third Colts drive with a quarterback sneak for a touchdown sneak to give Indianapolis at 13-7 lead.

By halftime, Jones had posted a career-high 236 first-half passing yards as Denver went into the break with a 21-20 lead. While the Colts feasted in Week 1 against a questionable Dolphins defense, their offense was humming early Sunday against a Broncos defense that projects among the league's best.

Denver got a stop on the fourth Colts drive to force a turnover on downs and end the streak at 10. But the record belongs to the Colts. And their offense continues to defy expectations.

Eagles turn interception in end zone into 20-10 lead

The Chiefs were driving to try to take the lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game against the Eagles and they went to one of their longest-running stars on a key second-down near the end zone, but tight end Travis Kelce couldn't come through this time.

Patrick Mahomes' pass went off of Kelce's hands and into the waiting hands of Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba in the end zone. Mukuba looked like he might go the distance for a touchdown, but Chiefs rookie left tackle Josh Simmons chased him down from across the field and knocked him out of bounds.

It just wound up delaying the same result, however. Jalen Hurts hit DeVonta Smith with a 28-yard deep shot and the quarterback scored a few plays later on a tush push. The touchdown made it 20-10 with under eight minutes to play.

Hurts' score came on his second tush push try in a row and officials missed a clear false start by the Eagles on the first one. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni challenged the play to say that Hurts got in the end zone and officials upheld the initial call, but NFL rules don't allow them to drop a flag even when a clear penalty can be seen on a replay.
