What's old is new again.
The Kansas City Chiefs — yes, the same Chiefs who started the season 0-2 and had pundits declaring their era of dominance was over — are 5-3 all of a sudden and winners of three straight games. They are the Super Bowl favorites (+425 at BetMGM) and AFC West favorites (-125), and Patrick Mahomes is the MVP favorite (+140).
And, despite currently having a worse record than 10 other NFL teams, the Chiefs are unanimously No. 1 in the power ratings of five different oddsmakers who were asked by Yahoo Sports this week.
"The Chiefs are No. 1 in my power ratings," Joey Feazel, lead NFL trader at Caesars Sportsbook, told Yahoo Sports. "First time they've been No. 1 all season."
Kansas City was a consensus top-five power-rated team by oddsmakers coming into the season, but every oddsmaker I spoke with had the Buffalo Bills and/or the Baltimore Ravens ahead of the Chiefs. Some oddsmakers had Detroit and Philadelphia ahead of Kansas City before Week 1 as well.
But Rashee Rice's return from a six-game suspension and a defense that's now up to ninth in DVOA — along with the No. 2-ranked offense by DVOA and the second-best point differential in the NFL (plus-83) — have the Chiefs back on top in the minds of oddsmakers.
Kansas City is currently a 2-point road favorite against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. If the line holds, it would be only the second regular-season game since 2021 that Josh Allen will be a home underdog (+1 vs. the Ravens in Week 1 this season).
As for Daniel Jones, Jonathan Taylor and the red-hot 7-1 Indianapolis Colts, current holders of the NFL's best record?
All five oddsmakers would favor the Chiefs right now in a game on a neutral field, anywhere from 1.5-3 points.
