Start-sit decisions can be vexing for even the best of fantasy managers, especially with so many teams on bye. Here’s our Week 8 traffic report to help you make some of those calls this week.
Green Light
QB Patrick Mahomes vs. Commanders: He finally has a healthy and available set of receivers, and Washington is giving away 8.3 YPA and a robust 105.0 rating to opposing QBs. Any piece of the Kansas City passing game is in play for Week 8.
RB Rico Dowdle vs. Bills: Although his workload was similar to Chuba Hubbard’s last week, Dowdle took over in the second half — and was much more efficient. We can’t ignore Hubbard’s contract extension from before the year, but the contending Panthers need to lean into their best players.
WR DeVonta Smith vs. Giants: Philadelphia opened the play-action page last week, with Smith the major beneficiary. If A.J. Brown (hamstring) is out or compromised, Smith can flirt with double-digit targets again.
TE Cade Otton at Saints: He’s racked up a useful 16-197-0 line the last three weeks, as the Bucs battle cluster injuries at wide receiver. Otton will likely lead this team in targets on Sunday.
RB Derrick Henry vs. Bears: The expected return of Lamar Jackson will widen the rushing lanes again, and the Chicago defense is handing out a juicy 5.3 YPC.
Yellow Light
WR Tee Higgins vs. Jets: He’s always going to be the second banana in the Cincinnati passing game, but Joe Flacco still has some life left in his arm, and the New York secondary might be without cover ace Sauce Gardner (concussion). Also add Cincy TE Noah Fant to your playable list.
TE George Kittle at Texans: Kittle is one of the best blockers in the league and it never bothers him to spend a day in the trenches, such as last week (zero catches). Houston is a difficult draw, but Kittle’s downfield ability and goal-line equity still make him an auto-starter.
RB Tyler Allgeier vs. Dolphins: It’s always a little dicey to consider a backup running back as a fantasy starter, but Allgeier has four different games with double-digit carries this year, and it’s possible the Falcons might run all over Miami’s horrible front seven.
TE Pat Freiermuth vs. Packers: He hadn’t done a thing before last week’s 5-111-2 demolition of the Bengals. Still, Green Bay’s seam coverage has lacked all season, and Aaron Rodgers likes to target short passes over the middle of the field. Freiermuth belongs on your sleeper page.
WR Chimere Dike at Colts: I don’t blame anyone who wants to steer clear of the worst offense in football, but Dike did post a 4-70-1 line with the new coaching staff, and injuries might force him into a bigger role this weekend.
Red Light
RB Alvin Kamara vs. Buccaneers: He’s stuck on one touchdown and the efficiency stats are the worst of his career. Kamara looks every bit the age-30 back that he is, and Tampa Bay is a top-10 rushing defense by all key metrics.
RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt at Chiefs: The Commanders are heavy underdogs, in part because backup QB Marcus Mariota is playing. JCM sees sparse work as a receiver, so game script could limit his Monday opportunities.
WR Christian Watson at Steelers: He hasn’t played a complete football game since last December and the Packers like to rotate a bunch of receivers. If active, I need Watson to show something in a real game before I trust him in my lineups.
Broncos D/ST vs. Cowboys: You probably thought this unit could be an every-week defense when you drafted, but the Giants moved the ball easily in Denver last week and no one has stopped Dak Prescott all season. Even in a bye-riddled week, I’m steering away from the Orange Crush.
