Aggressive Giants are 'big-game hunting' for receiver ahead of NFL trade deadline

Reinforcements could be on the way for the Giants’ depleted receiving corps.

Multiple sources familiar with the discussions told SNY that New York has been aggressive in its pursuit of adding a pass catcher for rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.

It takes two sides to make a deal, and it remains to be seen how much the Giants are willing to give up. But sources said the team is "big-game hunting."

The Giants are in an interesting spot at 2-4. If the NFL Draft were held this week, they would select ninth overall. That number could climb considerably, given the gauntlet of opponents awaiting them in the coming weeks. The Giants also hold selections in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.

Still, after beating the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles last Thursday, there’s new energy surrounding New York — particularly around its young quarterback.

Dart, whom the Giants traded up to select in this year’s draft, is 2-1 as a starter, throwing for 508 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s added 167 yards and two scores on the ground.

But injuries have threatened Dart’s development. Malik Nabers is out for the season with a knee injury, and Darius Slayton is dealing with a hamstring issue.

An influx of talent at the position could maximize Dart’s progress. General manager Joe Schoen, sources say, is trying to make that happen.

Chris Olave (Saints), Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins) and Jakobi Meyers (Raiders) are among the top potential targets.

The challenge with acquiring Olave or Waddle, according to sources, lies in persuading their current teams to part ways. A directive from ownership, front office shakeups or significant draft compensation might be enough to shift the conversation.

Waddle would be the most high-profile addition. The former first-round pick has 29 receptions for 390 yards and three touchdowns this season. He opened his career with three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, including 1,356 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022. He turns 28 in November.

Olave (39 catches, 342 yards, one touchdown) and Meyers (29 catches, 329 yards) are not as clean of prospects as Waddle, although either would provide a boost. Olave, 25, has battled concussions throughout his career, while Meyers is seeking a new contract and turns 29 in November.

The Giants hope to land a player who can contribute in 2025 and beyond. If they strike out on the top-tier names, they could pivot to a second tier of receivers.

The trade deadline is Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
