Free agent S Jamal Adams hoping to return to Jets, finish things the ‘right way’

The Jets selected Jamal Adams with the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, and the LSU product took the league by storm -- cracking the Pro Bowl and landing All-Pro honors during each of his first two seasons.

Things quickly took a turn for the worst, though, with the organization not trending in the direction hoped.

Adams was looking to become the highest-paid safety and was tired of losing, and his relationship with the front office led by Joe Douglas at the time completely blew up when he voiced his frustrations publicly and requested a trade.

Shortly after, he was shipped off to the Seahawks in exchange for a package including two first-round picks.

Adams ended up making the Pro Bowl during his first season in Seattle and he received a four-year contract extension, but injuries limited him to just 22 games over the next three seasons and he ended up being released.

The 29-year-old did stints with the Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans last year, but is back on the open market again after logging a total of 40 defensive snaps.

While things didn’t exactly end on a great note during his first stint in the Big Apple, Adams said this week on The Jets Lounge that he’d certainly be interested in running it back if the Jets were to come calling.

“I would be lying to you if I sat here and said I didn’t want to return home,” he said. “I would love to be back with the Jets, and obviously, finish it the right way. Man that would be a dream come true, just to kind of patch up that relationship and make it work.”

Adams would likely come cheap having appeared in just 15 games over the past three seasons.

While he isn’t nearly the playmaker he was when New York selected him in the first round -- he remains confident that he can be an asset for this young secondary led by Aaron Glenn, his defensive coordinator last year in Detroit.

“I’d just come in as a seasoned vet and just give game to the young cats and help in any way shape or form I can,” he said. “I know I can still play football, I’m healthy, I can impact the game in a lot of ways. I just need that fair opportunity to come in and showcase what I can do.”
