John Metchie getting ‘more comfortable’ in Jets’ offense day-by-day

The Jets’ offense didn’t have many positives on Thursday night.

Justin Fields struggled to get much of anything going again in the passing game, and they totaled just 245 yards of offense in a loss to the division rival Patriots

One of the lone bright spots, though, was the play of new WR John Metchie

Metchie played a limited role in his Gang Green debut last week against the Browns, but he took advantage of the opportunity for more snaps this week with Garrett Wilson sidelined to a knee injury.

The youngster hauled in all three of his receptions for a total of 45 yards.

Perhaps his biggest splash came late in the third quarter, though, when Fields connected with him all alone in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown to make it a one-score game.

It was Metchie’s second career TD and his first in green.

“It was a good play by everybody,” the WR said. “Of course, it starts up front with the o-line and the protection giving Justin an opportunity to get the ball off -- he threw a good ball and I think they sent the blitz.

“I just beat the man on a crossing route, I think he fell down, and it was just a good football play and that started up front with the o-line blocking and picking all of that up for sure.”

Metchie’s strong showing is certainly an encouraging sign for a Jets receiver room that desperately needs someone to step up with Wilson now on IR and out for the next three weeks.

The impending free agent didn’t have much of a role with the Texans or Eagles, but he’ll certainly get his chance here.

With each passing day he says his confidence is growing as part of the Jets’ offense, and he’s eager to continue developing that chemistry here down the stretch.

Metchie will look to provide even more of a spark next weekend against the Ravens.
