These Numbers Helped More Than 2K People Win Lottery Prizes in North Carolina

These Numbers Helped More Than 2K People Win Lottery Prizes in North Carolina

Zero proved to be the lucky number for a group of North Carolina lottery winners who together pulled in the biggest bucks ever won in a single Carolina Pick 4 drawing.

In total, 2,014 people played the numbers 0-0-0-0, and when those numbers, known as a “quad,” were drawn Saturday, the winners raked in a combined $7.78 million, the North Carolina Education Lottery said in a statement.

Nearly half (1,002 people) purchased $1 tickets, which won them $5,000 apiece. Meanwhile, the 1,012 people who bought 50 cent tickets were awarded $2,500 each.

The total winnings just edge out the previous Pick 4 record of $7.5 million, which happened in August 2012 when the numbers 1-1-1-1 were drawn.

The odds of matching all four numbers in a Pick 4 drawing are just 1 in 10,000, the statement read.

The North Carolina Lottery advised winners to be aware of extended waiting times when they come to claim their prizes due to the large number of winners.

The state recently doled out an even bigger prize earlier this month when a 66-year-old retiree won $344.6 million in the Powerball lottery.

The winner, Charles W. Jackson Jr., said he chose his numbers based on those printed in a fortune cookie his granddaughter brought him from a Vietnamese restaurant.

“You play to win — but you don’t ever expect to win,” Jackson, who opted for the lump sum of $223 million, told WRAL.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte to Be Page Boy and Bridesmaid in Their Teacher's Wedding to Prince William’s BFF

Prince George and Princess Charlotte to Be Page Boy and Bridesmaid in Their Teacher's Wedding to Prince William’s BFF

Prince William and his eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, are getting ready for another wedding.

On Sunday it was announced that Thomas van Straubenzee, the Duke of Cambridge’s lifelong friend, is tying the knot.

According to the Sunday Times, the godfather to 4-year-old Charlotte proposed to Lucy Lanigan-O’Keeffe, an assistant head teacher at Thomas’ Battersea School in London, where George, who turns 6 on July 22, is currently enrolled. Charlotte will start at the prestigious school in September.

William will take part in van Straubenzee’s wedding festivities and serve as usher for the ceremony, while George and Charlotte are expected to join the wedding party as pageboy and bridesmaid, the outlet reports.

Van Straubenzee and his younger brother, Charlie, 31, are extremely close to the royal family. The brothers attended Berkshire’s Ludgrove School with William and Harry, along with their late brother, Henry, who died in a car crash at the age of 18.

After Henry’s sudden death, the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund was set up in his honor. The charity, which was created by his parents, supports schools in Uganda and is the only charity for which William and Harry are joint patrons.

Both van Straubenzee brothers served as ushers in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle last May. It was reported that Charlie even gave a speech at the reception, while Thomas also spoke at William and Kate’s royal Westminster Abbey wedding in 2011.

Following their May wedding, Harry and Meghan attended Charlie’s wedding to Daisy Jenks in Surrey. The outing was the pair’s first public event since becoming husband and wife and also fell on Meghan’s 37th birthday. The Duke of Sussex served as usher for his friend’s big day.

The Times also reports that Charlie, who shares his own bond with Prince Harry is in the mix to be named one of Baby Archie‘s godparents.

Man Accused of Killing N.Y.C. Mom in National Guard and Drowning Their 2 Young Children

On Saturday morning, after discovering the bodies of a 37-year-old woman and her two toddler children inside a burning house on Staten Island, New York City police charged the young victims’ father with all three murders, PEOPLE confirms.

NYPD sources tell PEOPLE Shane Walker, 36, is accused of killing Alla Ausheva and their two kids: 3-year-old Elia Walker and 2-year-old Ivan Walker.

Investigators have yet to discuss a possible motive for the murders.

An official cause of death for the three victims is still pending, but sources tell PEOPLE the two kids were drowned.

Walker and Ausheva are active duty members of the New York Air National Guard, according to sources.

Hours before finding the three bodies, police located Walker walking along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. He was taken to a nearby hospital for psychological testing.

Police were dispatched to Ausheva and Walker’s home at around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a report of an active assault.

Officers arrived to find the house on fire and the bodies were found after the fire was extinguished.

Ausheva was found face down on a bed.

On Sunday, Walker was charged with murder, manslaughter, arson and criminal possession of a weapon.

It was unclear if he had retained an attorney who could comment on his behalf or if he had entered pleas to the charges filed against him.

Police had been called to the home previously to intervene in a domestic dispute, sources said, but no charges were filed.

Air Canada Passenger Wakes Up Locked in Empty, Dark Plane After Falling Asleep Mid-Flight

Air Canada Passenger Wakes Up Locked in Empty, Dark Plane After Falling Asleep Mid-Flight

A passenger who was getting some shut eye on a recent Air Canada flight woke up to find herself in a nightmare scenario.

Tiffani O’Brien was traveling from Quebec City to Toronto after a weekend trip, when she fell asleep mid-flight. When she woke up hours later still buckled in her seat, she says she was completely alone and the plane was “freezing cold” and “pitch black,” according to a Facebook post shared by a woman who identifies herself as O’Brien’s friend.

“I got super comfy reading my book, happy I scored my row all to myself (flight was about 1/4 full). I fell asleep probably less than halfway through my short 1.5 hour flight. I wake up around midnight (few hours after flight landed) freezing cold still strapped in my seat in complete darkness (I’m talking pitch black),” O’Brien wrote in a comment posted to Air Canada’s page by her friend Deanna Noel-Dale, who she had been visiting in Quebec and who shared the full story on her behalf (identifying O’Brien as Tiffani Adams).

“When my seat an inch back or my tray down flight crew take notice but yet you missed a person still strapped into her seat and all go on home?!?!” she wrote.

A representative for Air Canada tells PEOPLE the airline is “still reviewing this matter” and has “no additional details to share, but we have followed up with the customer and remain in contact with her.”

O’Brien explained that she tried to FaceTime Noel-Dale as soon as she awoke, but her phone’s battery died.

She also notes that she has an “anxiety disorder” that exacerbated the frightening ordeal. “I can tell you how terrifying this was.”

“I’m trying to focus on my breathing and control my panic attack while I attempt to charge my phone by plugging it into every USB port I could find,” she wrote. “No luck bc when they shut the aircraft down there is no power whatsoever. I’m full on panicking bc I want off this nightmare asap.”

O’Brien then said she made her way up the cockpit where she attempted to use the plane’s communication system, but the radio and walkie talkies didn’t work. Eventually she found a flashlight and tried to use it to signal for help.

“I’m making so

Busy Philipps Jumped in the Pool Wearing a $1,600 Dress at Her 40th Birthday Party in Mexico

Busy Philipps spared no expense for her 40th birthday celebration, especially when it came to picking the perfect outfit for the occasion.

The actress, who turns 40 on June 25, hosted a lavish “destination wedding (to myself)” in honor of her milestone birthday at Flora Farms in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. And she dressed in a romantic bridal-like design for the bash. Philipps wore a ethereal cutout Zimmermann maxi dress, which retails for $1,600 at Bergdorf Goodman, as she posed inside the decked out venue for a photo before the party started. She accessorized the summery look with a gold and turquoise statement necklace and matching earrings by jewelry designer and close friend Irene Neuwrith, who joined Philipps for her celebration.

Philipps explained the concept behind her destination wedding-themed birthday bash in the caption of her Instagram photo. “So I was thinking about turning 40. And it’s weird because my perpetual age is 19-sometimes 27 depending but now I’m 40(my birthday is the 25th actually) HOW AM I 40 YEARS OLD? Anyway. I decided I wanted to throw myself a destination wedding(to myself) for my 40th at one of my favorite places in the world @florafarms in Cabo,” she wrote.
