For Obama,Valerie Jarrett Is Essential Member of Inner Set

                 Valerie Jarrett

In one of the small, rural towns where Barack Obama was campaigning this year, he asked an aide for a slice of pecan pie to go with his usual dinner of salmon, broccoli and brown rice. But there was none on the menu, and the aide was loath to disappoint him.

Valerie Jarrett had no such qualms. Mr. Obama's even-keeled senior adviser and longtime friend told the aide to forget the pie. Then, she says, she told the senator from Illinois "to be careful what he asks for."

With Mr. Obama close to wrapping up the Democratic nomination, Ms. Jarrett, one of his oldest confidantes and someone widely tipped for a high-profile position in an Obama administration, is an adviser he can count on for unvarnished opinions.

"She is one of our best friends, somebody who is practically a sister" to him and his wife, Michelle, Mr. Obama said in a recent interview. "I don't make any major decisions without asking her about them first."

When she isn't traveling with him, Ms. Jarrett speaks to Mr. Obama two or three times a day, the candidate said. She is also an essential member of the coterie of advisers who have helped the couple navigate countless decisions, from whether he should run for president to how he should handle Hillary Clinton's resurgence after the Pennsylvania primary.

Valerie Jarrett, widely tipped for a high-profile position in an Obama administration, is an adviser he can count on for unvarnished opinions.

Unlike Burt Lance, who arrived from Georgia with President Carter and became his budget director, or Karen Hughes, who was President Bush's communications manager, Ms. Jarrett isn't a confidante with a particular portfolio. What she does share with these counterparts is a fierce sense of loyalty and a refusal to publicly say anything that may reflect poorly on the candidate -- or steal his thunder.

After Mr. Obama's national star began rising following his speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he and the Rev. Jesse Jackson were jockeying for position within the party. John Rogers, head of Chicago-based Ariel Investments LLC and co-chairman of Mr. Obama's Illinois finance operation, says he and Ms. Jarrett acted as intermediaries between the two men. Ms. Jarrett refused to acknowledge that tension ever existed.

When Mr. Obama's campaign went negative in Pennsylvania against Mrs. Clinton, Ms. Jarrett would say only that he was setting the record straight.

Among her more crucial pieces of advice to the campaign, said strategist David Axelrod, was to aggressively reach out to the African-American media after spending months focusing on the nearly all-white voters in Iowa. Ms. Jarrett said that outreach "was Barack's idea."

Ms. Jarrett, 51 years old, was born to an accomplished family in Chicago. Her father is a pathologist and was the first African-American to receive tenure at the University of Chicago's department of biological sciences. Her mother is a child psychologist and a former president of the Erickson Institute, a graduate school and research center. Ms. Jarrett grew up in the wealthy and integrated Hyde Park neighborhood when Chicago was among the most racially polarized cities in the country.

Throughout her career, Ms. Jarrett has straddled the divide between races, classes and the public and private sectors. As a court-appointed overseer to the desegregation of public housing in Chicago, she negotiated between the city, residents of down-and-out housing projects such as Cabrini-Green, and real-estate developers who were replacing the projects with mixed-income communities.

As the chairman of the board of the Chicago Stock Exchange, she juggled the concerns of hard-driving traders and New York bankers who bought a sizable stake in the sliding exchange.

And most recently, as a board member of the committee to bring the 2016 Summer Olympics to Chicago, she has forged cooperation between corporate leaders and the African-American community on the South Side, where most of the sporting and residential venues could be built.

Even though she has been deeply involved in Chicago housing for more than two decades, she has never been dragged into the numerous criminal investigations that have swirled in that world, including most recently the trial of one of Mr. Obama's earliest political patrons, Antoin Rezko.

On the campaign trail in North Carolina last week, Ms. Jarrett wore tailored Calvin Klein suits, diamond earrings and a sapphire on her finger the size of a Chiclet. She is typically introduced "as one of the most powerful women in Chicago," but when she speaks to young campaign volunteers she sounds like a concerned mother.

Over four stops before lunch in and around Raleigh, she encouraged volunteers to get out the vote and thanked them for trying. Twice she wiped tears from her eyes as she listened to the stories supporters told her about what Mr. Obama's candidacy means to them.

In 1991, Ms. Jarrett was a Michigan Law School-trained lawyer and head of Chicago's sprawling 250-person planning and development department. She wanted to hire a young Harvard Law School graduate from the South Side who was working in a private Chicago law practice.

But the prospect, Michelle Robinson, said she first wanted her potential boss to meet her fiancé, a savvy young lawyer named Barack Obama. The trio met at a restaurant for dinner. Ms. Jarrett -- older than both by a few years and much more established -- was grilled for two hours about Mayor Richard M. Daley's administration and who would be looking out for Michelle.

At the end of the conversation, she asked Mr. Obama "if she had passed the test." He smiled and said she had.

Mrs. Obama worked for Ms. Jarrett for two years, and the trio became fast friends. When Mr. Obama's book "Dreams From My Father" was published in 1995, Ms. Jarrett hosted a party for him.

That same year, Ms. Jarrett left the public sector and went to work for Habitat Co., one of the largest real-estate developers in Chicago. She is now the president and CEO and sits on a number of civic and corporate boards, including the committee to bring the Olympics to Chicago in 2016.

Those connections came in handy when Ms. Jarrett served as chairman of his finance committee during Mr. Obama's 2004 campaign for U.S. Senate. They also helped pave the way for Mrs. Obama's job at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where Ms. Jarrett was on the board of directors.

And if Mr. Obama wins, will she go to Washington? "I'm not thinking about that now," she said. "We're just taking care of what's in front of us."

Nope!  It is of no interest to me.  I'm a Democrat but this time around we are voting for John McCain because he is the one I would trust more.  Obama's past with Rev. Wright, Rezko, Farakhan and Ayers is very questionable.  I'm playing it safe, McCain has been a Senator for 26 years.

Three more buddies to add to your list:  Mohammed Askari Chandoo, & Wahid Hamid.  We should also consider the fact that  Valerie Jarrett was born in IRAN!

Former roomates and good friends of Obama's that EVERY AMERICAN needs to read about, and click on EVERY LINK and read it all! This should be an eye-opener for all Americans! And these people are friends of Obama's, and we have Americans going to vote for him? UNBELIEVABLE and APALLING!

When are black finally figure out that just because someone's skin is black (actually his skin is half white) it doesn't mean there is some unequivocal loyalty and the guy actually cares about you. Just because he pretends to be a black person doesn't mean he's going to do anything to really help you. The only person Obama cares about is Obama. How much better are black people in Chicago now because of Obama?  Not one bit - is the correct answer. America won't be any better either. In fact chances are we will all be worse off. All his solutions are the worn out socialist ideas that don't work. They are just ploys to appeal and manipulate poor and ignorant people. But dictators love 'em. I think that is why Khaddaffi called him "his muslim brother."

Just because a guy is black doesn't mean he is looking out for you. When black people figure that out they will quit voting for these clowns and get someone that really cares. Besides the reality is that all people have the same concerns whether you are white or black. So don't just vote black - vote smarter.

What elete University did you go to Emery? Or could it be that because you are a Republican you somehow think you are God? Who are you to judge? When you somehow think that just because someone is poor they are automaticly ignorant, that says a lot a lot about your mentality!  No, I am not black, nor am I poor. I just find it discusting when people feel like thay have to put other people down to make themselves look good.

Well it doesn't take a genius with any kind of degree to figure out Mr. Obama defiinately has some questionable ties.  I could probably get the jist of his minister's sermons probably with one visit without having to go there for decades and you don't have to be a Democrate or Republican to figure that out.   And by the way Gayle elite is spelled ELITE.

Valerie Jarrett is NOT a questionable tie, by any means.

I have not met Ms Jarrett personally but a close family member does meet her quite often in the home of her parents. In addition to her publicized accomplishments she is a caring, down to earth person, as are her parents. Education is important, but the real person is who counts. she is a real person.

Ms Jarrett was born when her father was working in Iran. So what? I didn't see the error since I read it to mean, "the accomplished family in Chicago" - family who have long lived in Chicago and do now. Such are the vagaries of English.

I do not have a problem with Valerie Jarrett if I did not know that she also maintains DUAL citizenship with Iran. Hello!! Does anyone realize that Iran hates our guts?? I am very concerned that now that he is president, How can someone who also has dual citizenship with a country that hates us, be in the White House? How can someone who is an "Iranian" also be working for us in a capacity of national security? There are a lot of concerns with this. I take issue with the fact that every major news source out there was 'biased' from the get go. Since when do the news get the opportunity to tell us how to think, what to do and who to do it with? is this what his Presidency is going to be made up of??

Another point, this man that is now our president, has already back tracked numerous times on his 'promises' that he made. He says at his presidential rally that it will probably take me longer, I will need a second 4 year term. Excuse me!!! He made all these promises that the world was gonna be great in a year and a half. If he got up there and said that, he knew months ago he was not going to see the changes he was "promising the people" throughout his election. He is a scammer, as are his 'buddies' he hangs with. I expect him to totally sell his soul to every communist and socialist nation in the world. And I expect him to sell out our country while he does this, along with Valerie Jarrett.

Ok Robin,

She is Iranian because her father was a researcher and was not afraid to travel unlike majority of people who only travel within two states from their farm land. Wake up you are calling someone enemy just because of the place they were born. How is that perception different than of those who mistreat American or assualt them for just being born in America?

I don't necessarily agree with Obama on every issue. But why is it that instead making rational persuations some of us just alienate others to prove a point. What makes someone more "American" than others? The person who stayed in his farm town the longest? What have you done for America that makes you more American than her?

Bear in mind when you judge, Vallerie Jarrett was born in Iran 23 years before Iran revolution. Up to 1979 Iran was under Shah's regime closests U.S. government friend after Israel. You investigate her family dual citizenship was because of tax / business issues or likely intelligence work on behalf of U.S. government. I also not sure when Jarrett family left Iran.

She was born in Iran to American parents who were working in Iran as part of a US government program.  I believe she left when she was 6 years old.   I don't think this means she has much, if anything to do with Iran.  If your parents are American, so are you, no matter where you are born.

BTW - As mentioned, Iran was once a friend of the US.

Education and information beats paranoia - try it!

Rather than spend so much time worrying about Obama destroying the USA and that he would do so because he is y’all need to get real about the mess we are in.  Not just from the past eight years but from the accumulation of very bad Republican policy decisions from 1980 until today.  Perhaps if all of you who are fearful of an Obama administration are happy with the programs, policies, and culture of the sitting President and his party and believe that as a nation we are better, your USA is very different from mine. If facts matter about the state of the nation matter look at information offered by conservative think tanks as well as others about the past eight years.  Why is Obama a boogey man?

All of our politicians have been complicit in the devastation of our economy,   great growth in the number of poor and unemployed and more.  Now all the money seems to have been sucked out the world.  How does our government respond, i t socializes the debt to us citizens. Huge profits made and a select few benefited and created a class of super wealthy people.  Now that all the money is gone, public money (tax dollars) has to be spent to rescue companies that made very bad business decisions and cannot pay their bills...  We all know what happens when ordinary citizens cannot pay their bills. So what about the rest of us?

It seems that the Obama administration will look out for the rest of us and will correct some the inequities in the real economy, and restore our democracy.  What is so wrong with giving these strategies a chance? As citizens of this country, each one of use has a responsibility to be more informed, more tolerant of differing ideas.  Code words that have shielded racism and racist statements are being decoded.  This is the 21st century, we have holograms, space stations, more advanced technology than anyone imagined...but culturally some of us are seem stuck in the 20th, 19th or 18th centuries...get real, join us in moving on or keep protesting  unknown "liberal policies".  However, please stop making stuff up.

I agree with Judith statements and comments, question is U.S. citizens vote for  and support president and congress members that follow idealogy government should protect (wall street or main street in action) rich and their high level of expection on profit to convice them create jobs for little guys or wide range of middle class should be protected to survive and have enough compensation to spend and make economy grow. Melted middle class that majority had to have 2 shift and multi jobs and still negative home value, no health care to be healthy to make more profit for rich and with little left over after tax deductions and high commute cost of jobs for high prices of food and basic expenses. More write off taxes for rich and more pressure on hard working citizens. Maybe it is intentional by special interest that choose government by campaign finance keep education level low in U.S.  compare not only to other industrial countries, many third world countries as well to be able full mass to get what they want "democratically!". What we have seen of Obama in work supporting main street and decision so far support wall street. Lets hope this is short term and in long term plans rich support Obama reverse melting direction of middle class to have kind of jobs to make enough to spend for all branches of economy and rich start to make profit again. Unless government budget and effective plans bring U.S. education to competetive level, We will have Robin and 47% average people and those benefit from this idealogy like Carl Rowe obsticle to grow.

I think it is very sad that our Country has come to this... that a man with so many things to hide can become President simply  because of the color of his skin... I don't have a problem with a black President but, I do have a major problem with all of his secrets, cover ups, and choice of friends.  Being the Commander in Chief is all about making sound choices.  His choice of friends is only one example of what lies ahead... Lets not forget his aunt that was ordered to leave the Country 4 years ago but, Mr. O didn't know anything about it and yet, his very close friend and advisor, is head of the Urban Housing Authority!   Oh, but the Republicans were attacked for leaking this story just days ahead of the election  Funny, all they could find on Sara was a sweet baby born with a birth defect and a pregnant teen daughter; which tells me, she's all the more everyday normal that I would prefer to see as a leader vs., someone who has too much to hide, including his friends.... I checked out his Public Allies website a month ago - his and Michelle's names were both on the home page.  November 2nd, I couldn't find their names anywhere on the site.... what's to hide there Obamaman??  My biggest fear that I haven't seen or heard anyone mention yet, is the safety of our Country wrt to National Security.  How do we know which of his friends he'll be sharing OUR secrets with????   Did anyone think of that before they voted for him??  Yah, we're in for a change alright.
